Inter-agency TWG on the Containment of Knife fish Infestation launches the Knifefish Processing Plant

February 10, 2015 – The Inter-Agency Technical Working Group (TWG) on the Containment of Knife fish Infestation launches the Knife fish Processing Plant at Sitio Balanga, Brgy. Pinagbayanan, Pila, Laguna.

The establishment of pilot knife fish processing plant is a component of livelihood project jointly spearheaded by LLDA, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to provide financial, technical and augmentation support to address the Knife fish infestation in Laguna de Bay.

Through the cooperation of the local executives of Pila, Laguna, the inauguration of the Knife fish Plant was successfully carried out. Such inter-agency collaboration specifically provides funds for the retrieval of knife fish, capacity building and training on fish processing and marketing. The event highlighted the turn-over of Shared Service Facilities to its beneficiaries, the Alyansang Kababaihan ng Pila (AKAP) Inc., a women’s organization who will carry out the project operation of processing the Knife fish into value-added products and the Mangingisdang PILA, Inc., a fishermen organization who are tasked to undertake the actual retrieval of Knife fish from the lake and provide supply of knife fish for processing.

Present at the event were Dir. Susan R. Palo, Provincial Director of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) who discussed the project overview, Regional Director Marilou Q. Toledo of DTI Reg. IV-A, Regional Director Leticia Diokno of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Reg. IV-A and Chief Adelaida Palma of National Inland and Fisheries Technology Center (NIFTC)-BFAR IV.

A welcome message was delivered by Mayor Wilfredo M. Quiat.
