MANILA Water has increased its sewage handling from 40 million liters per day in 1997 to 85 mld through 31 treatment plants in the east zone of Metro Manila.

The concessionaire covers the highly populated communities in the cities of Pasig, Mandaluyong, Taguig, including Quezon City and Cainta, Rizal.

The expanded capacity has the 40-nld Makati south , formerly Magallanes sewage plant, which serves the city’s central business district, and the University of the Philippines facility which treats at least 7 mld from the Diliman campus.

Treating raw sewage from households through Manila Water’s plants complies with the effluent standards of the Department of Energy and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources with a regular joint monitoring with the Laguna Lake Development Authority and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System.

The boost in treating sewage underscores the concessionaire’s efforts to protect the environment by reducing liquid waste released to the river systems, considering that household effluent is the main cause of the rapid deterioration of water bodies in the National Capital Region.
